We’ve
all heard how trust is one of the most important factors in a relationship and
how it’s one of the top things everyone is looking for in a partner, but why
exactly is that the case? Why is trust so important in a healthy and happy
relationship? Here’s some of the reasoning behind the importance of trust in a
relationship:
Gives you the ability to be
yourself. If
you can’t fully trust someone then you won’t be able to let your guard down and
be yourself around them. When we trust someone fully we can let go of the need
to be “on” all the time and can relax and let go. If you’re afraid of being
judged or made fun of or hurt then you’ll never be able to fully relax into the
relationship.
Let’s you reveal your true
feelings. You’ll
never be able to express how you really feel about your partner if you’re
afraid that they’ll hurt you or that they’re not taking your emotions
seriously. When you trust someone you can really open up and let them into your
heart, otherwise we remain guarded with our feelings.
Allows us to imagine the
future. You’ll
never be able to see a future with someone that you can’t trust because you
won’t be confident that they’ll be there for you. If you don’t trust them you
can’t be sure that they’ll stick around or that you should include them in your
future plans. If you want to start imagining a future with someone, you need to
be able to trust them and rely on them.
Lets you fall in love. If you can’t trust your
partner you’ll always be guarded, cautious and holding back. Doing this, we can
never fall in love. It’s called “falling” in love because we need to let go and
just let ourselves fall. If you don’t trust that your partner is there to catch
you, you’ll never be able to let go and let it happen.
Helps you feel secure. When we trust someone
we can reveal our private thoughts and feelings to them and give them our
hearts. We need to know that they will protect and respect our emotions in
order to feel safe and secure in the relationship. If we can’t trust them then
it’s more likely that we’ll be guarded and have a wall up around our emotions
as a way to avoid getting hurt.
Allows us to give each other
space. If
you trust your partner you can give each other space and freedom to do your own
thing, pursue your own interests and spend time apart. You’ll be confident in
the relationship and secure enough to know that they’ll be there when you’re
ready to come back. If you feel like you can’t leave their side because your
relationship might disappear if you turn your back, then it’s not a trusting
relationship.
